Obituaries : Rev. Walter R. Grimes

Rev. Walter R. Grimes, 89, died peacefully Friday, September 3, 2021, at Virginia Gay Hospital in Vinton of natural causes.

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday, September 11, 2021, at the First Christian Church in Vinton with Rev. Richard Jumper officiating. Visitation will be 4-6 p.m. Friday, September 10 at the First Christian Church. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery in Vinton.

Walter Ray Grimes was born January 17, 1932, in Beaumont, TX, the son of Walter and Helen Kirby Grimes. Walt grew up in Dallas and graduated from Texas Christian University with a Bachelor of Divinity degree. On June 9, 1974, Walt was united in marriage with Ruth Roberts in Ames, IA. Walt was a Disciples of Christ minister, retiring in 1996. He enjoyed fishing, woodworking, flying airplanes, singing, gardening, bowling, working with stained glass, and playing the clarinet.

Walt is survived by his wife Ruth of Vinton; daughters, L. Diane (Claes) Jonasson of Little Rock, AR, Debbie (David) Kendall of Bellevue, NE, Luanne (Lyle) Langstraat of Vinton; grandchildren, Elizabeth (David) Weisser, Rachel Kendall, Brian (Megan) Langstraat, Douglas (Sabrina) Langstraat, Katrina Langstraat, and Stephanie Jonasson; great-grandchildren, Lillian, Andrew, and Amelia Weisser and Hendrik and Eliza Langstraat.

He was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Barb Grimes, and granddaughter, Julia Langstraat.

Memorials will be directed to Doctors Without Borders, Habitat for Humanity, and the First Christian Church in Vinton.
