Michael John Van Thournout, 76, of Van Horne, IA passed away September 7, 2021 at Oldorf Hospice House in Hiawatha.
Michael was born April 5, 1945 to August Julian and Florence Catherine (Van Waus) Van Thournout in Belle Plaine, IA. He attended Country School Hartford #8 and graduated from HLV in 1963. Following school, Michael joined the U.S. Navy and was stationed in Japan and Vietnam. Upon returning home in 1967, he worked for Collins Radio, before the opening of General Mills where he worked for 34 years. On June 1, 1968 Michael married Michele Jacobi at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Belle Plaine. To this union three children were born before going their separate ways.
Michael enjoyed Rolle Bolle, gardening and flowers. He loved spending time with family and friends fishing, hunting and riding his recumbent bike.
Michael was a member of the Van Horne VFW, Victor American Legion Post 0054, Western League Rolle Bolle Club IL and Iowa Rolle Bolle.
He is survived by his children, Eugene Van Thournout of Cedar Rapids, Shirley Lane of Ely, Joshua (Dawn) Van Thournout of Newhall, siblings, Teresa (Dean) Roudabush of Atkins, Louise (Don) Miner of Luzerne, Julian (Ruth Ann) Van Thournout of TX, Chuck (Kathy) Van Thournout of Hartwick; grandchildren, MacKenzie, Sierra, Cole, Quincy, Kaleb, Braxton, Elijah, TJ, Izabelle; great-grandchildren, Lexi, Cayden, Kayleigh; and many more nieces, nephews, cousins, family and friends.
Michael is preceded in death by his parents; twin sisters, Margaret and Mary Van Thournout; brothers, Robert and Albert Van Thournout.
Mass of Christian Burial is 11:00 a.m. Saturday, September 11, 2021 at St. Michael's Catholic Church, Belle Plaine. Burial will take place at Calvary Cemetery in Victor, IA with Military Honors.
Visitation is 4-7 p.m. Friday, September 10th at Hrabak-Neuhaus Funeral Service, Belle Plaine. Memorials may be directed to the family. Online condolences can be sent to the family at www.neuhausfuneralservice.com
