Carl Dean Summers, age 73, of Vinton, IA passed away on Monday, December 13, 2021 at his home. He was born on April 1, 1948 in Jacksonville, IL to George and Dorothy Baker Summers. He married Sandra J. Heard and to this union two sons were born.

He graduated from East Pike High School in 1966 and joined the United States Marine Corp and served his country in Vietnam. After returning from the Marines, he was a farmhand for over 20 years for Jerry Miller Farms. He then moved to Iowa where Vinton became his home. Carl was a saw sharpener for Big Timber Inc in Vinton, IA, retiring after 15 years of service. Carl enjoyed playing golf and many friendships were developed over the years at Pearl Street, The O-Zone, Ron-Da-Voo and Golf Right. In earlier years, he spent time hunting and fishing. Carl was a member of AMVETS, VFW and American Legion.

Carl is survived by two sons, Mike (Anissa) Summers of Pearl, IL and Steve Summers of North Carolina; five grandchildren, Nathan Shellstrom, Alex Shellstrom, Haley Summers, Liam Summers and Raina Summers; two great grandchildren; brother, Glenn Summers of Pearl, IL; three sisters, Barb McIntire of Pearl, IL, Emily Verenski of Arizona and Pam Summers of Milton, IL; and several nieces and nephews also survive.

He was preceded in death by his parents, George and Dorothy Summers; four brothers, Dale Summers, Warren Summers, David Summers and Roger Summers; niece, Danica Verenski and nephew, Derek Summers.

Cremation rites have been accorded and graveside service will be held on Wednesday, December 22, 2021 at 1:00 PM at Green Pond Cemetery in Pearl, IL. Memorials are suggested to be made to Disabled American Veterans. Online condolences may be left to the family at www.nieburfh.com or at Phillips Funeral Home.
