Funeral services will be held at 10:30 AM, Wednesday, August 3, 2022 at St. John Lutheran Church in Newhall, with Rev. Steven Rempfer officiating. Interment will be held at St. John Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 4:00 until 7:00 PM Tuesday, also at the church. A memorial fund has been established.
Butch was born on June 11, 1937 in Cedar Rapids, the son of Roy and Evelyn (Braksiek) Pickering. He graduated from Keystone High School. On August 31, 1956, he was united in marriage to Delores Schirm at St. John Lutheran Church in Newhall. Delores preceded Butch in death in 2017.
Butch was honest, hardworking, generous, and had a steward heart. He would use his God-given gifts to help with building projects at the church, sheds or bathroom additions for children, or building cribs and beds for his grandchildren. His creative woodworking spirit enabled him to keep up with his beautiful wife's many requests for homemade furniture, from hutches for their candlewick, to end tables and bedroom sets. At the cabin, on the Cedar River, there would always be some addition or project that Donny would come up with. The cabin was always a special place for him where he taught many generations of family and friends to water ski.
Butch will be missed for his homemade ice cream, ornery grin, sense of humor, and those great one-liners. It was said that he was a man of few words, but when he spoke, his words spoke volumes. He didn't show his love in words but his actions and the grin on his face said it all.
He had a love for his family that will be irreplaceable. His grandchildren held a very special spot in his heart. He was so very proud of them. He had a love for his Lord and Savior with his Faith being his rock through the dark valleys he has had to walk through.
Butch is survived by his daughter Jodi (Scott) England of Cedar Rapids; two beloved grandchildren; Brittney England and Marcus (Elisabeth) England; sister Kay (Don) Albertsen of Van Horne; brother-in-law Harold (Rosemary) Schirm of Avondale, PA; many cherished nieces and nephews; and his "chosen children" Matt Levenhagen, Patty Pirkl, Linda Freitag, Mike Levenhagen, and Jim Freie.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Delores; his son Mark Pickering; daughter Tami Pickering; and his brother Larry Pickering.
