David Albert "Hermy" Herman, age 75, passed away peacefully on Monday, August 1, 2022 at his home in Atkins.

Memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 AM, Friday, August 5, 2022 at St. John the XXIII Catholic Church in Fairfax with Rev. Fr. Richmond Dzekoe as Celebrant. Interment will be held at the Iowa Veterans Cemetery in Van Meter, IA at a later date. Visitation will be held from 4:00 until 7:00 PM Thursday, at the Phillips Funeral Home Chapel (212 E. 6th Street) in Vinton.

David was born on September 26, 1946, at Corn Belt Hospital in Belle Plaine, the son of Theodore Albert and Margaret (Van Kerckvoorde) Herman. He graduated from Belle Plaine High School with the class of 1964. He served in the US Naval Reserves from 1963 through 1964 during High School and later served in the U.S. Army from 1966 through 1968 in the Viet Nam War. On November 30, 1968, he was united in marriage to Diane Rolfes at St. Paul's Catholic Church in Traer. David worked as a machinist at Rockwell-Goss.

Hermy was very active in his community, where he was a proud member of the American Legion for over 40 years, and also served as commander for many years. He served on the Atkins City Council, and as past president of the Atkins Community Club. He was a founding member of the '38 Fire Club.

David is survived by his wife Diane of Atkins; children, David M. (Carrie) Herman of Atkins, Daniel A. (Dr. Charlie) Herman of Lawrence, KS, Deanna M. (Eric) Otte of Swisher; 11 grandchildren, Randy (Michelle) Herman, Allison Herman, Cassandra (Josiah) Childs, Ariana (Jake) Lumpa, Noah, Leah, and Elijah Hull, Kylie Herman, Lillian Schmitt, Ashtyn, and Luka Otte; 6 great-grandchildren; siblings, Dennis (Judy) Herman of North Liberty, Jerry (Linda) Herman of Cedar Rapids, Angie (Jim) Patterson of Belle Plaine, Jeff (Julie) Herman of Belle Plaine, Mike (Cindy) Herman of Moulton, IA; half-brother, Dean (Denise) Grawet of Atkins; brother-in-law Dennis (Lana) Rolfes of Cedar Falls.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

David fought his cancer diagnosis for 11 years but it never defeated him. The family wishes to thank the doctors and nurses at the V.A. and U.I.H.C. for the care David received during his illness.
