VINTON – Maxine Merle Higgins, 90, of Vinton, died Tuesday, April 19, 2011, at the Vinton Lutheran Home.
Funeral services will be held 11:00 a.m. Friday, April 22, 2011, at the Vinton Presbyterian Church with Rev. David Gates officiating. Visitation will be held at the church from 9 to 11 a.m. Friday. Interment will be in Garrison Cemetery, Garrison, Iowa.
Maxine was born December 18, 1920, in Dysart, Iowa, the daughter of Frank and Ella Kersten Sutton. She married Richard William Higgins on August 17, 1940, in Garrison, Iowa. He preceded her in death on November 21, 2004.
Maxine was an active farm wife and helped Richard on the farm. She enjoyed gardening, baking, dancing and movies. Maxine was a member of the Vinton Presbyterian Church, where she was a past Deacon and served on several church committees, including Bethany Club, Friendship Fellowship and the Sewing Circle. She was a 4-H leader for ten years and was secretary of the Benton County Extension Council for three years. Maxine moved to the Vinton Lutheran Home in 2006 and enjoyed visiting with her friends there and being involved in activities. However, her greatest joys were her family, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Maxine is survived by three sons: Roger (Donna) Higgins of Mt. Auburn; Dennis (Roxanne) Higgins and Morris (Ida) Higgins, both of Vinton; 10 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; 1 great-great-grandchild; one sister, Lucille Higgins of Janesville, WI; and two brothers: Marvin (Norma) Sutton of Marion, and Dale (Donna) Sutton of Vinton.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; one grandson, Bradley Higgins; and one brother and one sister, both in infancy.
A memorial fund has been established.
