Jean Peterson, 93, died peacefully Monday, February 20, 2023 at Virginia Gay Nursing and Rehab, Vinton, surrounded by her loving family. A Celebration of Life will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, March 17, 2023 at Wesley United Methodist Church, Vinton, with Pastor Brian Channel officiating. Visitation will be held at the church from 9:00 a.m. until time of service. Burial will be held at a later date. Van Steenhuyse-Teahen Funeral Home is caring for Jean's family.
Jean was born September 9, 1929 in Madison, WI, the daughter of Dr. Merrill Orion and Margaret Stickney (Jones) Eiel. She was a graduate of Osage High School. She then attended the University of Minnesota where she earned a Bachelor's Degree in Music and English. On March 28, 1951, Jean was united in marriage to James Albert Peterson in Osage. The couple moved to Vinton in 1952 and remained here their entire married life. For two years, Jean taught music at the Iowa Braille and Sight Saving School. She then chose to be at home, caring for her family and loved ones.
Jean spent over 30 years playing the organ for Wesley United Methodist Church as well as being the accompanist for many weddings and funerals in several churches throughout the Vinton area. She was a member of two bridge clubs, was a 50+ year member of PEO and loved spending time with her friends and family. She will always be remembered for her kindness and fun sense of humor.
Jean is survived by her sons: Randy (Julie) Peterson of Vinton and Steve (Kathleen) Peterson of Madison, WI; seven grandchildren: Kelsey (Greg) Keyes, Lauren (Bryan) Meadows, Maggie, Claire, Kayla and Kendra Peterson and Philip (Brooke) Johnson; four great-grandsons: Brody, Cole and Mason Keyes and Hugh Meadows; and two sisters-in-law: Lauren Eiel of Delaware and Jan Peterson of Texas.
Jean was preceded in death by her husband of 66 years, Jim; son, John in 1995; brother, Jack Eiel; and brother-in-law, Bob Peterson.
A memorial fund has been established.
