Ernest "Ernie" Dean Dunkel, 76, formerly of Center Point, passed away peacefully at home in his sleep on Wednesday, April 12, 2023. Funeral services will be 12:00 p.m., Tuesday, April 18 at Van Steenhuyse-Teahen Funeral Home, Vinton, with Pastor David Condry officiating. Friends may visit with the family prior to the service, from 10:00 to 11:45 a.m. on Tuesday.

Ernie is survived by his son, Scott (Sue) Dunkel of Newhall; daughters: Jennifer (Sean) Matson of Burlington, WI and Valerie Dunkel of Monticello; three brothers: Dan (Edna) Dunkel of Hurt, VA, Rick Dunkel of Cedar Rapids and Doug Dunkel of Vinton; sister, Kathy (Tammy) Dunkel of Port St. Lucie, FL; step-children: Jarrod (Joanne) Lamphier of Lamont and Kris (Margie) Lamphier of Center Point; grandchildren: Amy (David) Condry, Robin (Jeni) Walter, Tyler (Liz) Walter, Katrina, Caitlyn Matson, Cheyenne Matson and Payton Matson; step-grandchildren: James, Jaklyn and Justin Lamphier and Avery and Ashly Lamphier; and great-grandchildren: Lauran, Libby, Piper, Avery, Brixton, Dallon, Bryar and Nash.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Jack Dunkel; and sister, Carol Green.

Ernie was born December 31, 1946 in Iowa City, the son of Ernest John and Ruth Leona (Wenger) Dunkel. He was the owner/operator of Dunkel Trucking for over twenty years. He was also employed by UPS, retiring in 2021.

Ernie enjoyed camping, biking, hunting and any other outside activities.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to Gentiva Hospice and the care provided by Matt, Cindy and Ashly.
