Melvin Hurst Jr., 69, of Vinton, passed away at Mercy Medical Center, Cedar Rapids on Saturday, May 13, 2023 following a courageous battle with cancer. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:00 a.m. Friday, May 19 at St. Mary Catholic Church, Vinton, with Father Jim Brokman as Celebrant. A Rosary will be recited at 4:00 p.m. Thursday, May 18 at the church. Those not attending the Rosary may visit with the family from 4:30 to 7:00 p.m., or after 9:00 at the church on Friday. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Vinton. Van Steenhuyse-Teahen Funeral Home is caring for Melvin's family.
Melvin was born November 3, 1953 in Vinton, the son of Melvin and Elnora (Williams) Hurst, Sr. He attended school in Vinton, graduating in 1972. On July 20, 1974, Melvin was united in marriage to Anna Robinson at St. Mary Church, Vinton. He was employed as a custodian for the Vinton/Shellsburg Community School system from 1973 until his retirement in 2016.
Melvin was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church in Vinton where he was involved with the Knights of Columbus, was an usher, Eucharistic Minister, lector, RE instructor and custodian. He was a 4th Degree member of the Knights of Columbus Hennessy Council in Waterloo. He was also very active with Boy Scouts where he served as a den leader and cub master. In his leisure time Melvin enjoyed camping, reading, crossword puzzles, bowling and collecting buffalos.
Left to cherish Melvin's memory is his wife of 48 years, Anna; daughters, Rebecca Haines and Heidi (Robert) Whelan; son, Mark Hurst (Amanda Nielsen); nine grandchildren: Ashley, Jason, Zebediah, Zeviah, Valerie (Michael), Courtney (Cj), Brady, Gracie and Corey; great-grandchildren: TJ, Selena and one on the way; four siblings: Rose (Raymond) Rouse, Larry Hurst, Billie Jo Lynch and Colleen (Dennis) Messick.
Preceding Melvin in death were his parents; mother-in-law, Charlotte Robinson; and son-in-law, Tony Cooper.
A memorial fund has been established.
