Delbert was born on August 2, 1930, on the family farm in Keystone, the son of Llewellyn and Helen Marie (Sadler) Smith. He graduated from Keystone High School with the class of 1948. He was united in marriage to Leona M. Maurer on March 3, 1951, Leona preceded Delbert in death in 2006. He was united in marriage to Judy Bradley in January of 2007, Judy preceded Delbert in death in 2012. He was united in marriage to Doris Brumley on June 4, 2013.
After Delbert and Leona were married Delbert took over primary operation of the family farm, where they raised their family. Summer vacations were spent traveling, camping and fishing. Over the years, they raised beef cattle, hogs, corn, and soybeans plus various other endeavors such as peacocks, quail, chickens, sheep, and sunflowers. The Smith farm was recognized as a Heritage Farm in 2021, celebrating 150 years in the family.
After retiring in their 50s the couple enjoyed traveling. They put down roots in both Cape Coral, Florida, and the north woods of Ely, Minnesota, where they built their log home on Eagles Nest Lake #3 out of logs harvested from their property.
After 55 years of marriage, and Leona's passing, Delbert met and married Judy. They spent five happy years together, dividing their time between Minnesota and Florida. Together they were very involved with their churches and communities.
For the past 10 years, Delbert and Doris have made their home in Cedar Rapids. As Delbert's health and eyesight diminished, Doris was his lifeline, dedicated to caring for Delbert with love. For the last sixteen months Delbert was a resident of an assisted living facility in Cedar Rapids.
During his lifetime Delbert was an avid fisherman and lover of cars! He was an active church member and a 4-H leader for 25 years. He was a lifelong member of the Masonic Lodge. Delbert was always ready to help a friend or neighbor in need. He will be missed by us all.
He is survived by his wife Doris Smith; 3 daughters, Susan (Dennis) Wallace of Minneapolis, MN, Deb (Mark) Rhoades of Cedar Falls, Sherry (Steve) Gehlsen of Ames; grandchildren; Leigh (Jason) Martin, Adam Rhoades, Sarah (Nathan) Edwards, Meagen (Will) Rahm, Elizabeth (Kevin) McClure, Emily Wallace, Allison (Jordan) Fuller, Lucas Gehlsen, and Ryan (Paige) Gehlsen; 13 great-grandchildren, Willow and Ayla Martin, Liam, Lilia, and Lucia Edwards, Rhys and Myles Rahm, Abi and Sydney McClure, Aslynn, Maelynn, Ezra, and Kohana Fuller; and brother Rodney (Glennys) Smith; and many others who loved him.
