Obituaries : Elizabeth Ann Gates

Elizabeth Ann Gates, 82, of Belle Plaine, IA passed away June 2, 2024.

Elizabeth was born October 5, 1941 the daughter of Mike and Lyda (Benett) Hoover. She graduated Belle Plaine High School the class of 1959. Following school, she worked in Cedar Rapids until moving to Seattle Washington where she met Sanford Gates. The couple were married to this union they had one son Glenn, they later divorced. Elizabeth moved her family to North Hollywood, CA. before moving back home to Belle Plaine in 1993, to care for her mother. After retirement she worked with the Belle Plaine Museum serving on the board as the treasurer.

Elizabeth enjoyed genealogy, making doll clothing, collecting swans and scratch cooking. She was an avid reader reading numerous mystery novels, and liked watching Murder She Wrote. She loved her time outdoors walking the neighbor's dog, gardening vegetables and flowers. She cherished having family and friends over for dinner. Elizabeth was a member of the Church of Latter-Day Saints.

She is survived by her son, Glenn Gates of Cedar Rapids; chosen son, Mitch Carlton of Cedar Rapids.

Elizabeth was preceded in death by her parents, sisters, Michele McNabb, Kathryn Miner; ex-husband, Sanford Joel Gates.
