Perry Kyle Hummel (88), a life-long Vinton resident passed away peacefully on June 24, 2024.
Kyle was born to Perry Joseph and Mary (Paisley) Hummel in Woodbury County, Iowa on July 23, 1935, as the seventh child of nine. With a twinkle in his eye, he would say: "You know… I AM the son of Joseph and Mary…" His humor and his relationship with the Church and Jesus were things he liberally shared with his family throughout his life.
Kyle was a businessman who wore many hats over his lifetime, from working on the family farm as a child; owning Hummel and Sons (tiling business) and Hummel Apartments; active as a real estate agent and appraiser; and served in the Iowa legislature for ten years - all in addition to being an active county and city community member. As a devoted husband and father, he always strived to incorporate his many occupations with his family life. This included family picnics in the middle of fields he was tiling; attendance at all sorts of athletic and music events (or blow-by-blow recaps over the phone if he was unable to be home); and field trips to the Capitol when he was in the legislature. He insisted on family vacations which brought memories each of us will forever treasure. When he was in charge of dinner, his waffle ice-cream sandwiches will go down in history as an all-time parental win.
We watched our dad live with vigor, tenacity, laughter, and grace. He did not tell us how to live… he demonstrated it for us daily. He offered significantly sound and sage advice to us throughout his life. He will live on through the love and values he taught by words and actions. One of our favorite lessons: "When making a deal with someone, remember… If it is not a good deal for both parties - it is not a good deal!"
Surviving to carry on his legacy of love are his children: Debra (Kevin) Hesson, Alan (Karen) Hummel, Steve (Maria Pia) Hummel, Karol Twilla, and Karen Oberman; 17 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren. He was welcomed warmly into Heaven by his loving wife Shirley, son Daniel Hummel, grandson Nathan Hesson, his parents, and several brothers and sisters.
We are deeply saddened that Dad is no longer with us, but thrilled with the visions of his reunion with mom, Danny, Nathan, and all he loved that have left before us. We will always love you Dad…and know your response to us would be simply - "I love you more."
A visitation will be held from 9:30 until 10:30 AM on Saturday, June 29, 2024, at the Phillips Funeral Home Chapel (212 E. 6th Street) in Vinton, followed by a funeral service at 10:30 AM, officiated by Rev. David Condry. Interment will be held at Evergreen Cemetery in Vinton. The casket will be closed to the public. In lieu of flowers or trees, memorials may be directed to the family.
