Obituaries : Gordon “Gordie” Young

Gordon "Gordie" Young, 83, passed away peacefully, at his home, on Wednesday, September 11, 2024. Memorial service will be 10:00 a.m., Wednesday, September 18, 2024, at Van Steenhuyse-Teahen Funeral Home, Vinton, with Pastor Jamie Wolf officiating. Friends may visit with the family from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. Tuesday, September 17, 2024, at the funeral home. Burial will be in Bear Creek Cemetery, Vinton.

On March 5, 1941, Gordie was born to Devere and Wanda (Wilhelmi) Young in Traer. He attended country school in Traer, graduating from Traer High School in 1959. On January 21, 1979, he was united in marriage to Betty Riggle in Waterloo. The couple moved to rural Vinton where they remained their entire married life. Gordie enjoyed working as a truck driver for Coots Material Company, 35 years as a machinist for John Deere, but his most favorite, fulfilling job was that of a farmer.

The most cherished memories of Gordie will be his smile, his laugh, his ability to talk to anyone, his love for farming, and any time he could spend with his children and grandchildren.

Gordie is survived by his wife of 45 years, Betty; four children: Mik Young, Rik Young, Kim Young, and Wanda Young; ten grandchildren: April, Shawn, Dustin, Dakotah, Tristann, Jaden, Kelsey, Kaylee, Grayson, and Apollo; several great and great-great-grandchildren; and numerous other family members.

He was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Kelly Garner; siblings: Dick Young, Betty Jackson, and Bill Young; and daughter-in-law, Renee Young.
