Derrell G. Scott Sr., 90, of Iowa Falls, IA, formerly of Independence, IA, died on Wednesday, May 28, 2025, at his home in Iowa Falls, IA.
Derrell was born on September 14, 1934, in Independence, IA, the son of Vernon A. and Opal C. (Brimmer) Scott. He grew up in Independence and attended the Independence Community Schools. Derrell went to work with his dad. They worked hard blasting away earth to make way for the Pennsylvania Turnpike. Derrell spent many hours driving a dump truck during that project and many others like it.
He married Shirley F. (Mulnix) Spear on February 5,1954, at Waterloo, IA. They made their home in Independence, IA. He enjoyed teaching his kids how to camp and hunt. He taught his kids many lessons over the years, especially how to be a person of faith. Derrell was a member of the Four Square Church in Burlington, IA.
Derrell worked as a mechanic at Dunlap Motors in Independence, delivered rafters for Wood Products in Waterloo, IA, and DX Sunoco in Waterloo, IA. Later in his career, he worked for Wolter's Mini Mart (later known as Kwik Star). In 1997, Derrell retired and drove a school bus for Dunkertown Community Schools for many years.
He is survived by his wife, Shirley Scott, Iowa Falls, IA, his children; Canduce(Greg) Daubenberger, Independence, IA, Derrell (Mickey) Scott Jr., Vinton, IA, Vernon (Jan) Scott, Independence, IA, Cheryl (Mark) Werling, Swisher, IA, and Jim (Kathy) Scott, Iowa Falls, IA, 23 grandchildren, 162 great and great-great grandchildren.
Derrell is preceded in death by his parents, Vernon and Opal Scott, two sons, Steven and Leslie Spear, three brothers, William, Richard, and Art Scott, and a sister, Virginia Vargason.
Visitation will be held from 4 PM until 7 PM on Friday, June 6, 2025 at the Reiff Family Center - Funeral Home & Crematory in Independence, IA. A Funeral Service will be held at 10:30 AM on Saturday June 7, 2025, at the Funeral Home in Independence, IA. Friends may stop by before the service from 9:00 until 10:30. Inurnment will be held at Mt. Hope Cemetery in Independence, IA at a later date.
