Celebration of Life will be 2:00 to 5:00 p.m., Tuesday, October 14, 2025, at the Vinton American Legion Hall, 105 N R Avenue, Vinton. Van Steenhuyse-Teahen Funeral Home has Daniel and his family in their care.
Daniel was born June 1, 1954, in Vinton, the son of Larry and Marlys (Grimm) Higdon. He attended school in Garrison and Vinton, graduating from Washington High School in 1972. Daniel proudly served in the United States Navy from 1973-1977. He was united in marriage to Terri Hendryx and they later divorced. Together they had two sons, Ryan and Anthony. On May 1, 2002, he married Barbara (Winter) Rommann.
Together, they spent more than 30 wonderful years together, including 23 as husband and wife. Daniel was employed by Benton County Secondary Roads for over 36 years, initially as a mechanic and then promoted to shop foreman. He retired in 2016.
Dan had a deep love for his family, which was always at the heart of everything he did. A lifelong enthusiast of cars and racing, he found joy both behind the wheel and in the garage, often sharing his passion with those around him. Whether teaching someone how to fix an engine or offering guidance in everyday life, he was a patient and generous teacher, always willing to lend his time and knowledge with kindness and care. He made everything look easy with a quiet strength and a ready smile. He enjoyed gardening and took pride in canning the fruits of his labor. Some of his favorite moments were spent at the shop with family and friends.
Left to cherish Daniel’s memory are his wife, Barbara Higdon of Vinton; sons: Ryan Higdon of Vinton, Anthony Higdon of Vinton, and Matt Rommann of Cedar Rapids; daughters: Nichole (Ben) Monat of Cedar Falls, and Laura (Matt) Mourlam of Walker; grandchildren: Kylee, Riley, and Kinley Higdon; Venna, Kason, and Nicala Higdon; Gabe and Isabella Monat; and Allison and Emily Mourlam; ; sisters: Nancy (William) Guyer of Pleasant Hill, and Sue (Rick) Erickson of Vinton; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and wife, Victoria Harden.
