SHELLSBURG: Jeanette M. Miller, 95 of Shellsburg died Wednesday, September 21, 2011 at Rock Ridge Residential Care Center in Shellsburg. Funeral Services will be held at 10:00 AM, Monday, September 26, 2011 at Phillips Family Center, 605 Second Avenue in Vinton with Rev. Mike Andrew officiating. Interment will be in Oakwood Cemetery in Shellsburg. Visitation will be one hour prior to service time at the family center. Jeanette was preceded in death by her parents, Andrew and Vanch Glime Miller, one brother in infancy, Horace Miller and her brother, Herschel Miller.

Survivors include her sister-in-law, Eva Miller; nephew, Rex (Mary) Miller all of Shellsburg; grand nieces, Tiffany Miller of Cedar Rapids, Sara Comp of Luzerne, Jill Comp of Keystone.

Jeanette put a great deal of effort into a detailed account of her life and her wish was to share it with everyone.

Jeanette saw first the light of day November 5, 1915 in the home of her parents, Andrew and Vanch (Glime) Miller on a farm southeast of La Porte City. She attended a one room country school through eighth grade. In her freshman year of high school she won Second Place in a spelling contest. Jeanette then entered the county contest held in Vinton and won First Place. In her senior year of high school she won First Place for shorthand. Jeanette entered the district contest for shorthand and won Second Place with a score of 97.25, the First Place score was 97.5. She graduated from Estherville High School on June 1, 1932. Jeanette was a member of the National Honor Society and was 8th in her class of 68.

Jeanette was employed by the WPA for three years as a steno. She was then employed by an Abstract Office in Vinton for seven months as a steno. Jeanette lived for several years on the family farm on the north edge of Shellsburg. She was later employed by Collins Radio for 30+ years. Many of those years she worked as a steno and later as a secretary.

Following retirement she traveled to many places in the United States, Mackinac Island, Alaska and Prince Edward Islands, one of the worlds’ greatest islands and Canada’s smallest Province.

Jeanette enjoyed listening to Christian Programs on the radio, working in her flower gardens, reading and baking cookies.
