VINTON: Marion Charles Cottrell, 74, died Monday, May 10, 2010 at Virginia Gay Nursing & Rehab in Vinton following an extended illness.
A Memorial Service will be held at 2PM, on Thursday, May 13, 2010 at Phillips Funeral Home Chapel, 212 E. 6th St., in Vinton. Interment will be held at Bear Creek Cemetery near Vinton. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from noon to service time on Thursday. A Memorial Fund has been established.
Marion was born July 1, 1935 at Vinton to Wesley and Grace (Hittle) Cottrell and graduated from Lincoln High School in Vinton. On September 10, 1966 he married Kathryn Abernathy at Independence.
Marion was a Supervisor at Hawk Bilt for fifteen years and in 1980 he opened Cottrell Radiator Repair. He sold the business in 2001. He enjoyed hunting and fishing and was a member of Ducks Unlimited. For many years he enjoyed driving Stock Cars in Vinton and helped organize the local International Motor Car Association.
He is survived by his wife, Kathryn of Vinton; his daughters, Cindy Johnson of Cedar Rapids, Crystal (Glenn) Clark of Lisbon, Conneye Dulin of Cedar Rapids, and Veanus (Jim) Hiler of Phoenix; fourteen grandchildren; several great grandchildren; his daughter-in-law, Deanna Abernathy; his sister, Berniece Schwartz of Vinton; and several nieces and nephews.
Marion was preceded in death by his parents; his son, Gene Abernathy; two great grandsons; his brother, Gale Cottrell; and two sisters, Joan Westcott and Charlene Priebe.
