VINTON – Nolan H. Reed, 86, of Vinton, died Sunday, July 22, 2012, at Virginia Gay Hospital in Vinton following a brief illness.
Visitation will be held from 9 to 10 a.m. Wednesday, July 25, 2012, at Van Steenhuyse-Russell Funeral Home in Vinton. Private family graveside services with military rites will be held at Evergreen Cemetery in Vinton.
Nolan was born one mile south of Mt. Auburn, Iowa, on April 22, 1926, the son of H.F. and Edna Holtorf Reed. He graduated from Lincoln High School in Vinton and received his Bachelor’s degree in science from the University of Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls. He taught high school biology in several Iowa schools and thoroughly loved his career. Following his retirement, he drove a bus for the elderly so they could attend congregate dining.
Nolan proudly served his country in the Merchant Marine Corps and the United States Army during WWII.
Nolan is survived by two sons: Frank “Frankie” Reed of Wiley, CO, and Jim Reed of McGregor; daughter-in-law Kim Jones Reed of Prairie du Chien, WI; sister Virginia Hart of Vinton; and his grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; son Phillip Reed; and brother Glenn L. Reed.
A memorial fund has been established.
