SHELLSBURG: Gerald “Jerry” Lee Kaplan, 70 of rural Shellsburg died Tuesday, October 2, 2012 at home following an extended illness.

Funeral Services will be held at 10:30 AM, Friday, October 5, 2012 at Phillips Funeral Home Chapel, 212 East Sixth Street in Vinton with Rev. Duane Wilcox officiating. Interment will be in Parker’s Grove Cemetery, rural Shellsburg with full military rites conducted by the Ray and Virginia Boyer American Legion Post #166 and Iowa Military Funeral Honors. Visitation will also be held at the funeral home on Friday from 9:00 AM until service time.

Jerry was born July 3, 1942 in Rockwell to Edward Lee and Delores (Logan) Kaplan and graduated in 1960 from St. Patrick’s School in Dougherty. Jerry also attended Kirkwood Community College and graduated in 1971.

In 1962 Jerry served his country in the United State Air Force for 5 ½ years when he was honorably discharged on July 17, 1968. Jerry was united in marriage to Eileen Ahrens on January 27, 1963.

Jerry worked at Square D in Cedar Rapids and retired after 37 years of service, following his retirement he worked as a security guard for Meth Wick Manor.

He will be remembered as a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend. Jerry was known to be a very hard worker, dependable and a man of his word. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends.

Jerry is survived by his wife, Eileen of Shellsburg; three daughters, Phyllis (Eric) Judas of Shellsburg, Brenda (Gary) Allison of Niles, Michigan and Julie (Kip Wieland) Kaplan of Cedar Rapids; one son, Dennis (Nichole Hackett) Kaplan of Shellsburg; eleven grandchildren, Jonathan and Elijah Kaine, Erica and Veronica Judas, Nathan, Ashley and Cole Allison, Anthony Kaplan, Colby and Landyn Kaplan and Trystin Hackett; brothers, Philip (Kathy) Kaplan, David Kaplan and Paul (Michele) Kaplan all of Cedar Rapids and Patrick (Anita) Kaplan of Marion; sister, Linda Kaplan of California, Mary Sue (Edward) Butler of Ohio and Jeannie (Larry) Kaplan of Des Moines.

In addition to his parents Jerry was preceded in death by his step-mother, Helen Kaplan, brothers, Robert and Daniel Kaplan and a sister, Phyllis Kaplan.

Memorials may be directed to the Ray and Virginia Boyer American Legion Post #166 in Shellsburg, St. Luke’s Hospice or to the family.

L&NP October 3, 2012, 3:23 pm SO sorry to hear about Jerry\'s death, I always enjoyed him. We rented the grain bin from him 1 year and will always remember Dennis playing in the mud with the pigs and Jerry had to go and change his dirty clothes. He must of been four years old then.
