Celia Elizabeth Doonan Hartz

Celia Elizabeth Doonan Hartz, 88, died peacefully Tuesday, Nov. 6, 2012, at her home in Blairstown. Funeral Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 10, at the Norway United Methodist Church in Norway with the Rev. Rosemarie Calderon Khan officiating. Interment will be held at Pleasant Hill Cemetery, Blairstown. Friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday at Phillips Funeral Home in Blairstown.

A memorial fund has been established for the Norway United Methodist Church.

Celia was born Sept. 16, 1924, the daughter of Irish immigrants, John and Flora (Howe) Doonan. She was born and raised on a farm near Toddville and graduated from Toddville High School with the Class of 1942. During World War II, Celia worked in the Wenkstern Hasley Company supervising 21 women creating crystal oscillator plates and assembling them.

On Jan. 4, 1947, Celia married Glenn Franklin Hartz at Salem United Methodist Church in Cedar Rapids. The couple farmed together near Blairstown during their married life. Glenn preceded her death on Oct. 8, 1974.

Most of Celia’s time was occupied with the caring of the land and her family. She enjoyed gardening and canning, sewing, crafting, working crossword puzzles, bus trips and especially the Hawkeyes. She was a member of the Calvary United Methodist Church of Blairstown for 64 years and served as church treasurer for 30 years. In her latter years, Celia was a well known artisan of Christmas wreaths she created for her family, friends and for craft shows.

Celia is survived by two sons, Andrew (Teri) Hartz of Blairstown and Dennis Hartz of Denver, Colo.; one daughter, Constance (Leslie) Zenk of Vinton; four grandchildren, Betsey (Ramzi) Nuseibeh of Newport, Ky., William (Melissa) Zenk of Cedar Rapids, Tyler Hartz of Cedar Rapids and Trevor Hartz of Blairstown; three sisters, Ruth Mortland, Mae Ferguson and Jane Nelson, all of Cedar Rapids; and many nieces and nephews.

Celia was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; two brothers, John Lee and Clarence Doonan; three sisters-in-law, Frances Doonan, Bernice Lanam and Helen Hartz; five brothers-in-law, Hiram Lanam, Milford Hartz, Cliff Mortland, John Ferguson and Lloyd Nelson; and one nephew, Allen Nelson.
