VINTON – Steven Duane Hite, 64, of Vinton, died Friday, November 23, 2012, at the VA Hospital in Iowa City following a sudden illness.
Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, November 28, 2012, at First Christian Church in Vinton with Rev. Connie Wacht officiating. Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, November 27, at Van Steenhuyse-Russell Funeral Home in Vinton and also one hour prior to services at the church on Wednesday. Military rites will be performed by Geo. G. Luckey American Legion Post 57 and Iowa Military Funeral Honors. Steve’s body will be cremated following services.
Steve was born February 10, 1948, in Vinton, Iowa, the son of Harold LaVerne and Eileen Marcella Reynolds Hite. He graduated from high school and attended college for three years. He proudly served his country in the United States Navy as a Seabee during the Vietnam War.
On March 23, 1973, Steve was united in marriage with Susan Kay Bergen at the Vinton Presbyterian Church.
Steve owned and operated Magic Carpet Cleaning in Vinton from 1984 until 2002, when he began working for Carl Evans’ real estate company. In July of 2005, he opened Hite’s Realty in Vinton. Steve loved his job and helping people.
Steve was active in the Vinton community as a member of First Christian Church, Geo. G. Luckey American Legion Post 57, Amvets 218 and VFW Post 8884, Lion’s Club and the Vinton Country Club. He was an avid golfer and loved spending time with his grandchildren.
Steve is survived by his wife, Sue, of Vinton; one son, Allen Hite of Cedar Rapids; two daughters: Mindy (Shawn) Kies and Chris (Doug) Miller, both of Vinton; four brothers: Marvin (Marilyn) Hite of Vinton; Mike (Becky) Hite of Gresham, OR; Richard Hite of Mill Valley, CA; and Gary (Jackie) Hite of Vacaville, CA; one sister: Lynda Nelson of Pittsburg, KS; and six grandchildren: Charity, Patience and Faith Kies, and Justin, Jennifer and Johnathon Miller.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Jim Hite; and one brother-in-law, Lee Nelson.
A memorial fund has been established.
