VINTON – Raymond Miller, 85, of Vinton, formerly of Mt. Auburn, died Wednesday, January 23, 2013, at Virginia Gay Hospital in Vinton following a brief illness.
A Celebration of Life service will be held 3:00 p.m. Saturday, January 26, 2013, at Oak Grove Church in rural Shellsburg with Pastor Larry Rodgers officiating. Inurnment will take place in Evergreen Cemetery in Vinton at a later date.
Ray was born August 5, 1927, in Independence, Iowa, the son of Floyd and Ruby Stephens Miller. He graduated from Brandon High School in 1944 and was very active in the alumni association.
On April 8, 1950, Ray was united in marriage with Leah Covington in Brandon, Iowa.
Ray enjoyed working with his hands, so his chosen field was construction. He worked at John Deere and Hawkeye Community College. He was also known as Eastern Iowa’s Volkswagen mechanic.
Ray was a member of Oak Grove Church. He loved spending time with his family and cheering on the Chicago Cubs, Iowa Hawkeyes and Waterloo Black Hawks.
Ray is survived by his wife of 62 years, Leah Miller, of Vinton; five sons: Rick (Jackie) Miller of Santiago, Chile; Gary (Kathy) Miller of La Porte City; Doug (Heather) Miller of Cedar Falls; Greg (Nancy) Miller of Fort Dodge; and Dwight (Gena) Miller of La Porte City; one daughter: Dianne (Jim) Blocker of Sterling Heights, MI; one brother: Jeff (Nancy) Miller of Cedar Falls; two sisters: Marlys Stankowski of Wheaton, IL; and Elaine (Jerry) Schumann of Independence; 13 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Bradley Miller; one brother, Wayne Miller; and one sister, Ardyce Steege.
