VINTON – Arthur E. Underwood, 82, passed on to be with the Lord and his sons, Matthew Eric and David Allen, on Thursday, January 24, 2013, at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City.

Memorial visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Monday, January 28, 2013, at Van Steenhuyse-Russell Funeral Home in Vinton. A Celebration of Life service will be held 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, January 29, 2013, at St. Mark Lutheran Church in Garrison with Pastor Mark Leckband officiating. Military rites will be performed by American Legion Ray Post 376 of Walker and Iowa Military Funeral Honors.
Arthur was born December 12, 1930, in Vinton, Iowa, the son of Ralph Arthur and Gertrude Martha Carey Cook Underwood. He attended Jackson No. 5 country school and graduated from Dysart High School.
Arthur proudly served his country in the United States Navy during the Korean War from 1951 to 1955. He served aboard the U.S.S. McNair DD679 and enjoyed planning reunions around the country for crew members for 14 years. He was a member of the American Legion Ray Post 376 in Walker; VFW Post 8884 of Vinton; and the Korean Veterans Association.
On January 22, 1956, Arthur was united in marriage with Dolores E. Hansen at First Lutheran Church in Belle Plaine.
Arthur farmed for 30 years and owned/operated the DX service station in Walker. He also drove school bus for 29 years.
At one time, Arthur belonged to the Cono Bible Presbyterian Church in Walker and was a member of the school board. He had currently been a member of St. Mark Lutheran Church in Garrison.
Arthur is survived by his wife of 57 years, Dolores, of Vinton; 6 sons: Mark Underwood of Freeland, MD; John (Mary) Underwood of Catlett, VA; Ensign (Lisa) Underwood of Marietta, GA; Andrew (Kim) Underwood of Phoenix, MD; Luke (Paula) Underwood of Nokesville, VA; and Nathaniel (Sharon) Underwood of Ozark, MO; 3 daughters: Karla Underwood of Cedar Rapids; Sarajane (Rick) Wood of Flowery Branch, GA; and Sabrina Kalman of Clermont, FL; 13 grandchildren; 2 step-grandchildren; 3 great-grandchildren; 4 step-great-grandchildren; 3 brothers: Bruce (Beverly) Underwood of Richland, WI; Paul (Linda) Underwood of Cedar Rapids; and Billy Underwood of Ohio; and 3 sisters: Betty (Clarence) Brown of Manchester, MI; Marian Kisling of Oceanside, CA; and Beverly (Harvey) Wiess of Vinton.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two sons: Matthew and David Underwood; son-in-law Marc Kalman; 7 grandchildren; and brother-in-law Bob Kisling.
A memorial fund has been established.
