VINTON - Robert H. "Bob" Christy, 86, of Vinton, died Tuesday, May 14, 2013, at Virginia Gay Nursing and Rehab in Vinton.
Funeral services will be held 10:00 a.m. Saturday, May 18, 2013, at Van Steenhuyse-Russell Funeral Home with Rev. David Gates officiating. Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday, May 17, also at the funeral home. Interment will be in the Garrison Cemetery with military rites by Geo. G. Luckey American Legion Post 57 and Iowa Military Funeral Honors.
Bob was born January 6, 1927, in Garrison, Iowa, the son of Harland and Mae Sturtz Christy. He attended school in Garrison and was a lifelong resident of the area.
Bob proudly served his country in the United States Army during WWII. He made two trips to France, transporting supplies and German prisoners. He also worked in the MPO.
On November 20, 1948, Bob was united in marriage with Donna Lyons at the Garrison United Methodist Church. She preceded him in death on December 23, 2003.
Bob worked many jobs during his lifetime. He farmed; was a truck driver; drove a school bus and worked as a crossing guard; and mowed lawns.
Bob had a great sense of humor. He loved Morel mushrooms and got to enjoy them one last time on Saturday, May 11. He loved spending time at the Eells’ residence and with his dog, Brandy.
Bob is survived by two sons: Rick Christy of Dysart and Mark (Lori) Christy of Vinton; one daughter, Vicky (Kent) Buckingham of Vinton; four grandchildren: Sam (Misty) Williams of Shellsburg; Kelly (Michael Fankhauser) Williams of Wellman; and Dylan and Kallea Mae Christy of Vinton; and six great-grandchildren: Riley and Nicole Lehman of Brandon; Rebecca and Jason Payne of Wellman; and Shai and AnnaBelle Williams of Shellsburg.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Donna; one brother, Myron Christy; one sister, Ruby Williams; and his beloved dog, Brandy.
A memorial fund has been established.
