Opinion : To the Editor: BC 4-H members set good example for teens with DM weekend

I spent a weekend in Des Moines with several Benton County 4Hers for what is called “Urban Plunge.” We spent the weekend visiting homeless shelters, cleaning up homeless camp sites, visiting the homes of special needs children and an after school program for under privileged children. This was a cultural experience for all involved. Benton County should be proud of our 4H program and the good things these teenagers do for the community. The news is always full of all that teenagers do wrong and not enough of what they do that is good. These 4Hers gave up a weekend that they could have spent with friends doing whatever teenagers do but instead devoted their time to helping the less fortunate. We need to look for the good around us and not concentrate on all that is wrong. If you are interested in this or other 4H programs contact the county Extension office at 319-472-4739.
