Dear Editor,This past weekend Benton County celebrated the 70TH Anniversary of the End of World War II at Celebration Park in Vinton. There are several people I wish to thank who helped to make this event possible.
First and for most to the veterans of World War II, if it were not for them the world would be a very different place. The veterans did not achieve this victory alone, they were aided by those that contributed from home, the farmers, the factory workers, the people that held paper, rubber and scrap metal drives just to name a few. To all of you I say thank you.
A heart felt thank you to my fellow planning committee members, Jay Herman, Leo Hlas, Ed McGivern and Dale Petersen.
A big thank you to Roger Uthoff for emceeing, Bobbi Enos for singing the national anthem, Chaplin Rex Shepherd, Benton County American Legion Commander George Reiss, County Auxiliary President Lynette Coats and Sergeant-at-Arms Rick Voss. Also to the members of the Firing Squad, the Color Guard and the Ladies that served the refreshments.
Thank you to those that contributed to the program financially, the guy that brought the WW II display and to those that provided the awnings and folding chairs. I am sorry, I do not know all of your names.
To the members of the three local community bands let me say, job well done I thoroughly enjoyed the music.
Thank you, to the Vinton Newspapers and Vinton Today for your excellent coverage of the event.
