Letter to the Editor: Roe VS. Wade overturned?

Dear Editor:

It is indeed ironic that tears are shed and hearts are broken when elementary children are shot dead along with two teachers, but riots and protests occur when the SCOTUS may overturn a 1973 decision on abortion. Why?

Is not one life “born” and another “unborn” more sacred than the other? The “unborn” and the “born” both need our protection from harm.

Life begins at conception and should end at natural death. Biology is a truism not to be overturned.

I would ask you to justify being so monstrous as to insist women carry to term babies that they cannot support financially and that conservatives will not allow assistance for them to support.

I won't bother giving you all the reasons because you know them as well as I do. As far as black women and abortion that you mentioned it is probably because more black women live in poverty and the feel they have no choice. republicans are constantly trying to cut programs that would benefit these women to keep these babies. In other words republicans say they care about the unborn baby but in all honesty if they cared about the woman before she got pregnant things might be different. republicans are trying to keep them from voting and putting more restrictions in place. republicans always want to take their voice away which contributes to the choices they are forced to make. Whether born or unborn. How false it is the marking R's with a broad brush as uncaring about children is just balderdash!!! Your side is indeed incable of learning you must stick to the NARRATIVE! NG June 6, 2022, 3:30 pm John, protests occur because republican men are trying again to take women's rights away. When is the last time men's rights were taken away? That would be never because men are in control and wouldn't do anything to affect themselves. It is always blame the women. A man can impregnate a woman every day for 9 months while a woman can be pregnant only once during those 9 months. So why is it always the women the republicans try to control and do nothing about the men. Why would Abbot want to force a 9-year-old to give birth or a 12-year-old, little girls who were raped by family members? What a woman does with her body is none of your business. When I think of some of the republicans in congress I ask myself do they really care one way or the other about babies before they are born or is sit that they just follow the republican rhetoric? I think the later is true. They prove that when they don't care about the babies after they are born. The shooting in NewTown killed little children and they did nothing and now more babies were killed. Republicans are being well paid by the NRA and even if the committee comes up with a bi-partisan bill it is doubtful republicans in the Senate will pass it. I just heard the shooter in Uvalde went back and forth between the two rooms and walked into one room and asked if anyone needed any help. A little bot stood up and he shot him. That is what our babies are dealing with after they are born, again because republicans block any kind of gun safety. No one wants to have an abortion. It is never part of a woman's plan to get pregnant and have an abortion but republicans never give any thought to the woman and what she might be going through. They want to no longer give exceptions for rape or incest. They don't care if the woman is being beaten by the man in her life or he runs off and leaves as soon as he finds out she is pregnant. I can guarantee you one thing, making the decision to have an abortion is never an easy decision to make but it should be their decision, not yours. Norma Gould

DL June 6, 2022, 3:23 pm Can a death certificate be legally signed by a medical professional, if no birth certificate can be produced? The Bible is not a legal document any more than War and Peace is. I personally don't have a defense for general abortion, if it takes place after 24 week. Although, there are legitimate reasons for specific cases. I do admire some of the best of Foster Parents, but the overall Foster System, in our country, is a very cruel way for a child to be brought up. It shouldn't be seen as a reliable resource for unwanted births. If Republican men want to regulate a woman's life and body, they should all be on a revolving list of financial responsibility for each unwanted child, along with paid up life insurance for every expecting mother.

RB June 6, 2022, 1:15 pm If we are going to force a woman to carry a fetus to term then we need to force the man to be accountable. Republicans are pro-birth because they quit caring about the newborn at birth. They want to cut programs that would help the mother raise a healthy baby. If life begins at conception we should be able to count the unborn on our taxes and even insure them. I’m not crazy about abortions, especially the later they occur, but it’s not my health care decision or the government’s decision. It’s between the mother and her doctor. In addition, to be pro life we might do something about gun violence instead of sitting on our thumbs!

JS June 5, 2022, 4:30 pm Can an unborn survive after 20 weeks? 24 weeks? Whether born or unborn a life is a life. Ssurvival has nothing to do with the argument. That unborn is not a rock, pig, dog, or cow; it is human and deserves protection.

LD June 3, 2022, 10:49 pm Life may begin at conception, but the fetus is not going to live until 24 weeks of gestation, if even then. It will take $1 million or more to bring that poor child out of the NICU, probably with significant impairments. But no one wants to talk about the cost of hospital care or ongoing care of the child ever leaves the hospital.
