Every morning should begin with all the romance and drama of an English royal wedding.
Some here complain about big deal that many of us Americans find fascinating. "What's the big deal?" they ask.
- In today's world the big deal is the the hope that a wedding brings.
- The memories of the William's mother Diana's wedding...and for those older, the memory of Queen Elizabeth's wedding.
- The dream of a happily ever after.
- The pagentry we DON'T have in America.
I remember seeing Prince Charles and Lady Diana's wedding when I was just a kid. At that point, there wasn't the internet, or a lot of background available like you can find today.
The fascination of a real life prince and princess is something that every little girl dreams of...unfortunately Charles and Diana didn't last.
The thing I enjoyed the most was the unapologetic hope that this couple's marriage and happiness would indeed last.
While watching, you could see all of the royal family, and realized all the broken dreams that sat there and all the memories that had to be wandering through their minds as they watched another member of the family married.
Many shared the memories of their own weddings. The Queen, William and Harry, all shared the memory of the funeral of their mothers.
I found myself thinking about all this young man has been through in his life already. The divorce of his parent's, the funeral of his mother, the remarrying of his father to the woman who caused his parent's divorce.
One of the folks talking about the couple made the observation that the thing Kate brought to the marriage for William, is a normal, stable family.
The older I get, the more you see the word "normal" redefined when it comes to a family.
And yet, I don't doubt at all that's what William was looking for in a girl...a place that felt safe, a girl that had it together, thanks in part to a steady family life.
In our society today, everyone takes a "normal" family for granted. If you are fortunate enough to have a father and mother who both love you, and love each other, you are getting to be a rare species.
But for this couple, we do sincerely hope them many, many years of happily ever after and a normal life.
Congratulations William and Catherine.
