By Anna Demuth, Benton Co EMS Association President

Only a legislature can make 68 cents 35 cents.

When you see the EMS levy on the November ballot, remember that thanks to the wizardry of property tax formulas, 68 cents per thousand in assessed valuation could become just 35 cents.

Here's how it works.

* Start with the assessed valuation for your residence* Multiply that by .5465 (the property tax rollback)* Subtract $4,850 in homestead credit* Now…multiply that number by .68

Here's a simple example.

For a home with a valuation of $175,000, the EMS levy will cost about 17 cents a day. If you're a business, own farmland, or want to know precisely what passage of the EMS levy will cost you, please get in touch with the Auditor's office.

So much for the math. Why is this needed?

Last year, EMS was called to provide services nearly 2,500 times in Benton County, directly serving nearly 10% of the county's population. As the number of EMS calls increases, private insurance, Medicare, and Medicaid reimbursements aren't keeping up with rising costs. If the gap between reimbursements and costs continues to grow, emergency medical services may not be there when you need them most.

Voting to support EMS through a tax levy is new to Iowa, enacted by the legislature two years ago. Emergency medical services in Benton County and the first responders they support have relied on reimbursements and donations, both of which are dwindling.

If you want someone by your side or by the side of your loved one when a medical emergency strikes, please vote YES for EMS on November 7th.

PK October 16, 2023, 11:59 am I've needed the EMS twice this year, and I say, THANK GOD FOR THEM!!!
TJ October 16, 2023, 12:08 pm Oh, why not? According to the city minutes, we gave them cash from a grant with a caveat to get financial management assistance from Virginia Gay Hospital for a period of six months. "During this time North Benton Ambulance will restructure to become financially solvent." Apparently, the city thinks they need help managing their finances so sure, ding my taxes some more.
Why not make our ambulance do this BEFORE asking me for more money?
So Vote Yes, if you think they have it together. As for me it's a hard NO!
JH October 16, 2023, 1:48 pm 2,500 emergency calls. That's alot of help, comfort for individuals and their families, saved lives, spared from a level of disability, and the resulting loss of income, etc. Far-reaching effects. An active county EMS is a great thing. Let's show our gratitude. Vote Yes on the 7th.
Js October 16, 2023, 7:55 pm Sharon needed help. I thought it was really serious. I called 911 for an ambulance for her. They dispatched from La Porte. The first on the scene was Deputy Sheriff Brandt - did the vital signs etc. Next was The Mt Auburn Crew. Finally the ambulance dispatched - about one hour later. All turned out O.K. Basically the ER at Virginia Gay stabilized my bride. Thanks to Matt and the ER. Unfortunately, the GPS sent them to 56th St. instead of 19 Ave. That's the dirt class B road. Always that seems to be GPS first choice. Go figure.
DM October 20, 2023, 5:13 am TJ This is for you! I hope you never need their service! Maybe you should reconsider your vote of No. I can not believe that one would vote NO! You have no one that someday might need help in bad condition? Maybe you can see in the future , but I think I will take a chance and VOTE YES . IT'S JUST MONEY THAT PEOLPE NEED ! HAVE A GREAT DAY!
AM October 23, 2023, 7:52 pm I am asked to be a financially responsible adult daily. My property taxes have been raised exponentially. Now you’re asking only property owners to bail out an entity that cannot seem to be asked to be financially responsible? How about you do a local option sales tax and ask everyone to bail them out? The burden should not fall solely on property owners.
