This last couple of weeks, I've spent a ton of time reading legalese. When digging into how government works it's like putting a giant puzzle together. Just when you think you have it all figured out, you see a "but" or whatever the legal word or phrase that is used to indicate that what you just read may not apply, if...
When you follow that rabbit trail, you are taken in a completely different direction.
So that's what I've been doing. I've been digging into what exactly IS the Board of Health, what its functions are, who appoints it, what the roles are, and all of the things having to do with our now-obsolete Board of Health.
It's probably some light reading that the supervisors should do.
Apparently, not having a County Board of Health is something that no one has ever done in Iowa. But leave it to Benton County to put itself on the map as being the only county to NOT have one.
That's where we are.
No Board of Health. No one to manage any kind of health crisis that the county might face. Nope. Nada. Zilch.
Nevermind that a Board of Health is one of these board required by Iowa Law. Benton County apparently doesn't feel the need to actually follow the law.
So here we sit. Almost a month out and it appears that this is not a priority for the Board of Supervisors. There is no action currently being taken to ask for people to apply to fill the board.
So cheers, here's to your health!
As for me, I'm going to be diving back into the topic.

Editor's Note: Actually the board is autonomous meaning they are appointed by the supervisors, but after that they have jurisdiction over all health matters in the county. The supervisors allow them a budget and the board can decide how to manage the monies. So, no they do not report to the board.
Editor's Note: I will ask. Here's the link to 2022 https://www.bentoncountyia.gov/public_health/board_of_health/
