Around the holidays, my cousin and I used to joke about our aunts all getting together and comparing health stories. Usually it would center around testing their blood for Diabetes.
Somehow it came about that when they'd start this, we'd quietly say, "We vant to suck your blood" followed by a lot of laughter in the younger generation.
Then life happens.
After giving birth to 6 babies, I now have a lot more respect for Ambulances that go screaming by, or helicopter leaving hospitals, or those who donate blood.
I was probably the poster child for complicated deliveries. Of course, I probably wouldn't have been had I not had that first c-section, but that's another topic.
On babies 5 and 6 I realized the importance of donating blood.
With both these babies, I needed a total of 20 units of blood and plasma.
Up until this time, donating blood was something I had never even thought about.
I just assumed blood went to car accident victims, or someone who had some sort of horrible accident.
Of course now I realize even more there are folks out there that really do need a pint. Folks that may be fighting diseases and need you to help them.
New mommies who had a rough delivery and will be too weak to write you a thank you note for a few months.
You never know, YOU may even need it.
Life is fragile. But there's one thing we can do to help each other...give a little!
It's pretty painless, and takes only a few minutes of your day.
But tomorrow, put it on your phones, on your calendars, stop by and donate a little. It won't cost you a thing, and you'll leave feeling like you really did something important, because you did!
