Throughout the week, people from all over the world have been celebrating Global Entrepreneurship Week. With 37,000 activities planned, and directly engaging more than seven million people, the leaders of 117 countries are convinced and see value in what entrepreneurs bring to a community.
Being an entrepreneur is fun. It’s challenging and can be very rewarding, however, there are a lot of associated risks. Entrepreneurship requires a lot of personal and outside resources, commitment - more than I can express - and the failure rate is high. It comes at no surprise that most people don’t consider starting a company as a viable option of employment. Despite the risk, many people have trusted their crazy idea and we should be very thankful they did.
It’s important to remember that all companies started merely from an idea. Look at what we have locally: John Deere, Amana, Kinze, Rockwell-Collins, to name a few. Those companies didn’t start out employing thousands of people - they started small. With the support of the community, and by trusting a crazy idea, those companies are now an imperative part to our local economy.
If starting a company isn’t something that interests you, I encourage you to support those who have taken the challenge. Give business owners feedback. Tell them what you like about what they’re doing, and what you don’t. Share the company with someone who would appreciate or find value in the product or service. At the very least, be a cheerleader. If you’d like to see local companies succeed, there is nothing worse than doing nothing at all. Join me in celebrating Global Entrepreneurship Week!
