To the Editor:

Educators in the Vinton-Shellsburg district are working diligently to provide valuable educational experiences for our children. And when I say educators, this includes: teachers, administrators, associates, custodians, nurses, coaches, etc, along with parents.

As I walk down the hallways of our schools, I see faces of fellow Vinton-Shellsburg graduates who have chosen to have their children and grandchildren educated in this district. An enormous sense of pride exists here in our district. I see it in the faces of community members as they attend musical performances, athletic competitions and community activities. And when we someone is need of assistance we pull together to help.

We must be cautious as parents when profit companies promise “quick fixes.” A former teacher from a for- profit educational company writes, “Companies hook the client by diagnosing children through testing as either below, at, or above grade level. No matter what your child tests at, they will recommend a program to begin immediately. To guarantee continued success they'll talk you into more programs.”

Parents should also be cautious when companies guaranty rapid academic growth shown through pre and post testing. A parent who enrolled a child in one of those companies wrote, “…the school testing performed in late May showed that our daughter was at the end of a second grade level in reading assessments. The educational company’s testing performed in the same time showed that my daughter tested at 5th grade/4th month overall in reading.”

This pre- and post-testing can provide a false sense of academic growth for parents. Hiring a private tutor or utilizing the numerous academic services in our district would be a better use of time and money.

We can point fingers and place blame teachers for educational concerns in our district, or we can work together to create the best possible educational environment for our youth. As a parent of a child who struggles academically, I understand that educational responsibilities must be a joint effort between the teachers and families. Our family has spent countless hours traveling to occupational therapy appointments, vision therapy sessions and educational meetings, all in an effort to help my child find academic success. For those parents that have driven as far as Des Moines for the educational needs of their child, kudos to you. Thank you for putting your child's academic needs as a priority.

The educators in the Vinton-Shellsburg district give an enormous amount of themselves each and every day to benefit our youth. I am amazed at their perseverance and collective commitment to the children in our district. There are many teachers that have made the choice to work here, live here and raise a family here. These teachers have changed lives here in our community and for that I say Thank You!

As a community, let’s continue to work together with the Vinton-Shellsburg educators to provide a positive education experience for our children.

EO February 11, 2013, 9:59 pm Well said, Sara. I think we are all pretty lucky to come from and be a part of a community like Vinton Shellsburg.
You made very valid points. I agree with you, it is a joint effort between teachers and parents in order for a child to totally succeed in their academic abilities.
I feel very lucky and proud that my children are a part of the VSCSD. I give the staff and educators credit for everything they do to help our youth. Each of them give huge amounts of time and energy to our kids. I cannot thank them enough. I am proud to be from this town. I am proud that my children are growing up here and getting their education here. I look forward to the future and everything that this school district has to offer.
MC February 12, 2013, 7:57 am In order for a business to be survive let alone be sucessful, especially in today\'s environment, it must produce quality results. Judy Hintz of Educational Resource Associates has been in business for over 30 years and has helped over 30,000 students achieve necessary skills. Of the ten years Judy Hintz taught in public school she was involved in special education for four of them. She detected the ineffectiveness of the methods being used and struck out on her own. She is far from a scam artist.
TP February 13, 2013, 3:58 pm From Mr. Tilson on 23 January: \"As of the end of the 2012 school year, the Vinton-Shellsburg Community School district is now ranked #25 out of approximately 365 districts in the State of Iowa in terms of its drop-out rate. Yes, you read that correctly. In fact, we\'ve been in the top 50 for several years now.

Here\'s another sobering fact about our school district\'s educational performance: In 2012, our 6th graders tested at a 55% reading proficiency level as a group. The State average was 77%. Our 6th Graders (my own son included in that group), tested 22% BELOW the State average in their reading proficiency. Our district has scored below the State average in grade by grade comparisons 38 out of 58 times (that\'s 65% of the time) since 2003.\"

Yes, I\'m very certain that almost everyone connected with our local school system has the students best interest at heart. But, the facts, according to Mr. Tilson, remains that we are sub-standard. Period. It\'s very disturbing to me that we are below the state average and our state was, at one time, number one in education and our country lead the world. Now, we\'ve slipped locally, as well as the state and our U.S. of A.
How many minutes per day, month and year does our students get meaning full class room instruction? Compared to other countries? Yes, I know the state requires a minimum, but it seems like the class room hours of learning isn\'t (I wanted to say ain\'t) what it used to be years ago. Here\'s hoping our local, state and USA schools regain our number one spot in education.

Thank you Jeff Tilson for bringing this disturbing matter to our attention.
JH June 20, 2013, 12:13 am It is a sad state of affairs when folks keep hammering it is the responsibility of the PARENTS to act in a certain way to have reading success. With appropriate reading instruction, the student must only show up!!!Will put my expertise and Integrity above any educator in the state of Iowa!!!! Wake up Vinton, put your excuses aside and open your minds to become a winner...I dare you! Judy Hintz Director of Educational Resource in West Desmoines Iowa
