Contact between vehicles is a part of dirt track racing; most cars that circled the track at the Benton County Speedway have scars from encounters with other vehicles.
Here are a few photos from Sunday's Hogan Memorial that show how a quarter mile dirt track can indeed be a crash course.
Because of the risk of collision and injury and fire, the Vinton Fire Department and North Benton Ambulance Service have vehicle and personnel at every race. Firemen who attended the race on Sunday said there have been no major fires; just a few engine flames at times.
There were a few minor collisions on Sunday, and one roll-over, but the driver walked away with no serious injuries.
