“Little ‘c,’ not big ‘C.’
“Nose to the ball.”
“Smash.”
“Flood.”
“41.”
Vinton-Shellburg Viking football players – present and future – are learning the meaning of these words in seven-on-seven workouts every Wednesday night at an “open field” practice behind Tilford Elementary.
Head Football Coach Jim Womochil, along with his assistants and the coaches of the Metro teams, have been teaching the fundamentals of football to players in grades 5-8.
On Wednesday, the focus was on passing and receiving.
High school player demonstrated several of the passing routes from the high school playbook; the younger players then had their turn to run those routes.
The evening also included lessons on throwing stance and mechanics for quarterbacks, and footwork for both passers and pass catchers.
“We will beat teams with these concepts,” Womochil told the player, adding that all VS players will use those concepts from their freshman year throughout high school.
Smash and flood are code words for specific passing plays. Little C refers to using a short, quick throwing motion. “Nose to the ball” means that receivers are taught to turn their head in the precise direction the ball is in relation to where they are.
