The Vinton-Shellsburg freshman football team recovered from its first setback, a 23-14 loss at Western Dubuque.
The 9th grade Vikings defeated Independence, 50-8.
The Vinton-Shellsburg freshman football team moved to 4-1 on the season with a dominating 50-8 win over the Independence Mustangs Monday night.
Jared Thompson passed for three touchdowns, two to Dylan Wagner and one to Nate Struve in the victory. Fullback Chase Werdeman added a rushing touchdown and had several tackles on defense as linebacker.
Lineman Drew Wiley was a force on defense with several tackles for loss in the game.
The freshman next face West Delaware on October 7th in Manchester.
At Western Dubuque the week before, the Vikings were up 14-0 when quarterback Tyler Bartz was knocked out of the game with a concussion. Running back Wes Edwards suffered a shoulder injury which sidelined him as well. The Bobcats took advantage of the disruptions to come from behind.
Edwards returned to action Monday; Bartz will suit up against WD.
