The Vinton-Shellsburg baseball and softball teams began action last week with a roster heavy on youngsters.

The Vikings, who gave coach Jim Struve his 500th career victory last season, have just three seniors, Logan Davis, Griffin Williams and Luke Moen, on the roster; along with one junior, catcher Aaron Henderson; and four sophomores. The Varsity/JV roster includes 13 freshmen.

The Vikettes have just two seniors: Ashley McKenna (1B) and Bethany Stainbrook (SS); and three juniors: Sydney Robertson (OF) Kathleen Steffen (C) and pitcher Brea Burroughs. The Vikettes' other main pitcher is sophomore Lyndsey Cornell. Several freshmen, as well as a few 8th-graders, are on the varsity roster.

The Vikettes came within one game of going to the State Tournament last year. They lost two games at home to Marion on Monday, 6-2 and 7-6, leaving two runners on base in the last inning of the second game. Their record is now 6-2.
