After a one-run loss in a game with a handful of defensive miscues, the Vinton-Shellsburg Vikings came back to defeat Benton Community, 12-2 in high school baseball action Monday in Vinton

In the first game, senior pitcher Luke Moen gave up only four hits but six walks and defensive miscues led to six unearned runs for the Bobcats in the first five innings. The Vikings trailed 6-2 at one point, and lost 6-5.

Freshman Tanner Davis threw two scoreless innings in relief, striking out two and giving up one hit.

The Vikes were down 2-0 in the second game before rallying for 12 over five innings to win by the 10-run game-shortening rule.

Freshman pitcher Scottie Wirth earned the victory in the second game. He struck out nine Bobcats in five innings, giving up two earned runs on two hits while walking one. The win was Wirth's third of the season.

Freshmen Wes and Will Edwards each doubled in the game; the Vikes tallied nine hits and seven walks.
