Vinton-Shellsburg boys golf coach Chad Pettyjohn is pleased with the progress of his golfers.
The Vikings have now outscored 21 of the 25 teams they have played against.
Below are the summaries from Coach Pettyjohn from recent meets:
V-S wins at River Ridge in Independence
The Viking boys played Independence Thursday in a JV/Varsity contest at the par 36 River Ridge Golf Course. It was a nice evening with the weather playing little role in the contest. The Vikings won the meet shooting 170 while Independence shot 180.
Bryce Shaw was the medalist shooting 41 beating teammate Daniel Janssen on a card back who was the runner-up medalist with 41 as well. Tyler Stueck and Grant Noren both shot 44 for the Vikings as Austin Bohnsack and Mike DeLong also turned in scores of 45 and 47 respectively.
The JV squad won their second contest of the year shooting 184 defeating Independence JV who shot 216. Brandon Geiger was the JV medalist shooting 44 and Austin Carolus was the runner-up with a 45. Kyle Jorgenson shot 47 and Tanner Cummings carded a 48. David Bray shot 52 and Brian Stainbrook shot 56.
This raised the record to 9-2 for the year.
Viking place three in the top ten in Waverly
The Vikings carded their best round of the year at the par 70 Waverly Municipal Golf Course Saturday. The wind was around ten miles per hour and the temperatures rose through the morning making a great day to be golfing. There were twelve teams competing in the tournament and the Vikings carded 311, which put them in second place. They closed the gap on West Deleware from earlier scores in the year who shot 293 as the top two ran away from the field. Other scores were: North Fayette Valley 338, Oelwein 348, Jesup 351, Charles City 354, Crestwood 361, Waverly Shell-Rock 364, Belmond-Klemme 373, Clarksville 374, New Hampton 384 and Waukon 385.
Daniel Janssen placed third firing a one over 71. Grant Noren placed sixth shooting his best round of the year carding a 77. Tyler Stueck placed eighth putting a third Viking in the 70’s with a 79. The Viking placed all 6 Varsity competitors in the top 25 with Mike DeLong and Brandon Geiger placing sixteenth both shooting 84 and Austin Bohnsack was 21st carding 85.
The Viking raised their record to 19-3 for the season and look to continue to find consistent rounds as they start the push toward conference tournaments a couple weeks from now.
Vikings place second in Wildcat quad event
The Vikings fought gusty winds and cold temperatures Monday to place second in a quad in Shellsburg. Marion, Clear Creek-Amana, and Williamsburg played joining the Vikings in the tough conditions. The Vikings placed second shooting 164 behind Williamsburg who were four shots better carding 160. Clear Creek-Amana shot 169 and Marion shot 171.
Daniel Janssen continued to play well and keeping his game consistent firing a 37 to be the medalist. Dylan Wolfe of Clear Creek-Amana was the runner-up carding 38. Austin Bohnsack and Mike DeLong shot 42 while Grant Noren finished with 43. Tyler Stueck shot 44 and Bryce Shaw finished with 45.
The Vikings take a 21-4 mark into Thursday’s contest with Benton at the Vinton Country Club.
