Sports : V-S volleyball season begins with close win; tournament set for Saturday

The V-S Varsity team will host its annual tournament this Saturday.

The VSHS sophomore volleyball team.

The VS 2010-2011 freshman vollebyall team.

These seniors lead the VS volleyball team into its tournament this weekend.

The Vinton-Shellsburg volleyball team began its season with a close win over South Tama, Tuesday evening, Aug. 31.

The varsity beat South Tama last night 3-2, in a series that included five close games. The two teams traded victories for the first four contests, then V-S won a narrow 15-11 victory to claim the match.

25-20 VS win
22-25 ST win
25-19 VS win
17-25 ST win
15-11 VS win

The girls host their tournament this Saturday in the VSHS gym.

V-S seniors this year include (in the photo accompanying this story): Michelle Cook, Savannah Gray, Tori Brody, Mackenzie Westendorf, Allison Emrich and Erika Hammar.
