The racing season in Vinton wrapped up on Sunday with the annual tribute to veterans.
Approximately 20 former soldiers and sailors saluted the flag during the National Anthem, then paraded around the track in military trucks, as spectators waved and applauded.
When the racing began, drivers were doing their best to earn enough points to win, or at least advance in the standings.
In the Modified class, Troy Cordes had entered the final night of racing one four points ahead of Scott Hogan. For Hogan to win the track points championship, he would have had to finish five places ahead of him.
Hogan had that much of a lead going into the final laps, but a caution allowed Cordes to make up some track position, and the Dunkerton driver finished 1 point ahead of Hogan.
"Scott drove his pants off tonight," his wife Jolyne wrote on their Facebook page. "He got 2nd. His car was AWESOME!!!! That being said it was also a heart breaker.... Had the championship until a yellow flew on the last lap!!! We lost by 1 point!!! Congratulations to Troy Cordes and his crew on the Track Championship!!!!!
We can't thank Victory Chassis enough for our amazing car and to all our family , sponsors and fans.... Without each and everyone of you this wouldn't be possible so again thank you for all you do."
Hogan bought his car a few weeks ago, after selling the one he drove at the beginning of the season. He did win the points championship at the Lee County Speedway in Donnellson.
