Sports : Hyland wins Wamac wrestling title at 145; Vikings 10th in team points

Nick Hyland is the Wamac 145-pound champion.

The Wamac champions hold their brackets Saturday; the tournament took place at VSHS.

Led by Nick Hyland’s first place finish, the Vinton-Shellsburg wrestling team finished 10th in the Wamac Conference Tournament held in Vinton on Saturday.

Hyland pinned his first three opponents to get to the championship round, then wrestled to a 1-1 tie over Cole Fritz of Solon. The match then went into the sudden victory round, where Hyland scored a takedown to win the match and the 145-pound title.

Hyland is now the school record-holder in wins and recorded his 150th victory last weekend in the Anamosa tournament.
