Sports : Vikette softball season with loss to Xavier

Senior Maci Griffith doubled in her last game as a Vikette, a 3-0 loss to Xavier in Regional play.

The Vinton-Shellsburg Vikettes ended their 2016 softball season Thursday with a first-round loss to C.R. Xavier. Sophomore Alex Maynard pitched a complete game, but the Viking offense struggled, getting just three hits. Senior Maci Griffith had the team's best contact, a two-run double.

The Vikettes played strong defense, taking away some Xavier hits with good glove work. But Xavier also played well, making catches when VS batters made good contact.

The Vikettes end the season at 12-25, and say farewell to Griffith as well as seniors Lyndsey Cornell and Abby Gloede.
