It's hard maintaining a swimming program without a pool to practice in - but it's a good lesson in playing the hand you've been dealt. Due to prolonged mechanical problems at the IBSSS pool, the last practice VSU swimmers had in a pool was Sept 18, which was 14 days ago. We've had 2 meets and lots of dryland strength training sessions since then - but there's just not much you can do on land that really translates to swimming.
Considering the lack of recent training, the girls performed very well in the double dual with Boone and host team Grinnell, managing to edge out Grinnell by 4 points in the team standings. Most girls were close to their fastest times this season. Justyce Dominick (VS) even cut 3 seconds in her 200 Freestyle to take second in the event, missing first by just .11 seconds.
Chloe Juhl (Union) had the grueling task of racing the distance events without having practiced for 2 weeks. The longer the event, the easier it is to see the difference in not practicing. Along the same lines, Carlie Spore and Sadie Hennings (also both of Union) took on the challenge of the 100 Butterfly. All three girls held their own in their events, scoring helpful points for VSU.
Fortunately, an agreement has been reached to practice at the pool at Waterloo West High School for the next few days. Time in the water will be invaluable in preparing for our next meet. With districts just 4 weeks away, it'll be a hard charge to overcome the time we've missed in the pool. It'll be a mental game as much as a physical one.
