"We really wanted this one," said Vinton-Shellsburg girls' basketball coach Rich Haisman. "You always want that last win…and that was the last win, in the last game of DECADE!"
The first-year Vikette coach nailed it. Behind 17 points from Lucy Howes-Vonstein, 11 from Taryn Sutton and a 10-point breakout performance from freshman Alyssa Griffith, V-S downed arch-rival Benton Community, 53-42 Friday night at Garrison Fieldhouse.
The Vikettes trailed 12-7 after one period and were down 17-11 with six minutes left in the half before going on a 15-3 run that stunned the Lady 'Cats to take a 26-20 lead at the half.
Benton cut the lead to 28-26 midway through the fourth quarter, but the Vikettes closed the quarter on an 8-0 run to go into the final eight minutes leading 36-26.
Kayla Griffith added seven points, with Abby Davis and Davia Herger adding two each.

The Vikettes (4-4) will have a well-deserved week off of practice before getting back in action in the gym in preparation for the next decade when they host South Tama on January 3.
