Coach Joe Johnson's Vinton-Shellsburg Vikings used a big fourth-quarter rally and a combined 31 points from Sam Griffith and CJ Rickels to grab a much-needed 48-42 WaMaC win over Independence Tuesday night at the Garrison Fieldhouse.

Both teams struggled to find the basket in the early going as the Vikes led just 8-6 after one period. They would put the margin to 13-6 midway through the second quarter before the Mustangs charged back with a 14-2 run to take a 20-15 lead into halftime.

The game went into the fourth quarter with Indee up 30-26 before the Vikings fought their way back, pulling away late for the six-point victory.

After hitting just one bucket in the first half, Griffith finished the game with 16 point -- including three three-pointers.Rickels had just five at the half but finished with 15. Sam Moen added seven, Jose Wilson three, Derron Hughes, Elijah Kalous and Ethan Rollinger two each and Tanner Rodman one.

The Vikes (5-8 overall) hit the road Friday night to take on Clear Creek-Amana.
