All Iowans are eligible to participate in the State Games of America, along with Illinois, Minnesota and South Dakota athletes, as these states currently do not offer a state games. Over 30 state games from across the country served as qualifying events for the State Games of America. The Olympic-style competition brings together medalists from other state games. The 2022 State Games of America will be held in conjunction with the Summer Iowa Games. An estimated 12,000 athletes will be participating in the Games. Currently 45 of 50 states will be represented. In addition to competitions in over 40 sports, one of the highlights of the event will be the Opening Ceremony on Friday, July 29 in Hilton Coliseum at Iowa State University. This event will feature local and national entertainment, a parade of athletes and keynote speaker, Matt Stutzman, Paralympic Medalist and World Champion, from Fairfield, Iowa. It is anticipated that State Games of America presented by Grinnell Mutual will have an economic impact of $25 million on central Iowa, with as many as 10,000 room nights used at area hotels.
