History was made Friday evening in Vinton, as the Vinton-Shellsburg Red Cedar Shooters held their first home contest.
The trap shooting team coached by Brendan Knudtson competed against Mount Vernon. The rain let up enough to allow the contest to continue in fairly dry conditions; the coach said as long as there was no lightning, the event would take place as scheduled.
The event is possible in Vinton because of an Iowa Department of Natural Resources grant that paid for a new target throwing machine. DNR Safety Officer Pat Jorgensen is one of the team's advisors. Several fathers of team members also help Knudtson with the team.
Knudtson said that trap shooting is quickly gaining popularity in Iowa, with dozens of schools fielding teams and more than 1,500 participants competing throughout the state.
