Vinton-Shellsburg has seen its opponent for Monday's boys basketball Substate game already this seeson.
That contest was the second game of the season, a 72-47 loss at Western Dubuque. The Bobcats are 21-2 on the season, losing only to Mount Vernon, 56-62, and Maquoketa, 52-50.
For the Vikings, 19-4, the loss to the Bobcats was one of two double-digit defeats this year. They also lost to Williamsburg, 73-55, on Jan. 31. Their other two losses were by two points each, both on the road. The Vikings were undefeated on their home court.
If the Vikings are to advance to the State Basketball tournament, they will have to beat Western Dubuque to get there.
While the Vikings were defeating CPU Thursday evening, 61-46, the Bobcats were handling Dubuque Wahlert, 74-61. The two teams will play at 6:30 p.m. Monday, Feb. 27, at the McLeod Center in Cedar Falls in the Substate 4 championship. The winner advances to the State Tournament, which begins March 5.
In the win on Thursday, at Cedar Falls High School, Max Griffith led all scorers with 21 points. Grant Sagan added 19 for the Vikings and senior Jake Milroy added 11. See complete stats HERE. The Vikings built a 30-13 lead by halftime, and withheld CPU's efforts to get back in the game. The Stormin' Pointers outscored the Vikings in the third quarter, 18-16. Each team scored 15 in the final period.
