The first-ever coed WaMaC Super conference track meet took place in Vinton on Thursday evening. Both boys and girls teams competed, with more than 800 athletes signed up for track and field events.

"Overall the first WAMAC supermeet was a success," said VS boys coach Aric Chvala. "O don't think you will find a conference meet anywhere in the state that has the level of competition that the WAMAC has, year in and year out. This year was no exception.  Our workers and administration should be commended for outstanding job they did; it is not a small task and without a template to follow for a meet like this they did outstanding. The bar is set very high now for whoever hosts this meet in the following years."

"The meet went very well for the first co-ed meet," said Vikette coach Heather Kalous. "Deb Cummings and the staff in the press box were very organized and efficient.  The starters kept the meet running smoothly and all the workers were great."

Other coaches praised the work of VS personnel in running the meet.

"Vinton did a great job running the track meet last night," said Kal Goodchild of Benton Community. "To be done by 9 p.m., with a track meet that size,  says to me that it was extremely well run.  Great work Deb and Jim!"

"Vinton did an awesome job running the meet last night," said Mount Vernon coach Duane Orr. "It was very well-organized and the event was held in an excellent venue. Tim Sanderson and John Zietlow did a phenomenal job keeping the events moving along, particularly under the additional pressure of threatening weather to the south and east."

The Vikings finished ninth, the Vikettes 14th.

"Our kids competed pretty well," said Chvala. "In a meet like this you really have to be outstanding to score high in any event.  We were the same team that we have been all year long; the points just don't add up like they do in smaller meets.  We have a lot of things going in the right direction and they all know what they are going to have to do next week to get where they want to go."
